    trying to decide

I'm going to be starting college very soon, and i'd like to take a language course. In highschool I took one and a half years of german and enjoyed it very much, but i've always wanted to learn Russian. I don't have any ties to Russia, but i just get a thrill whenever I hear the language spoken.

What is your opinion? should i continue with german or try out russian? All I hear about Russian is how hard it is. What about it exactly makes it so difficult to learn?

    Thanks.

Go for the thrill! I did. When I was in high school I had 4 years of Spanish. In my last year I took Russian too (so me and a buddy could talk in Russian). I continued it in College and grad school. Never a regret. Удачи!

The tidal wave of pronunciation, alphabetic and sentence structure differences etc, you'll have to ride over the sea of grammar rules. But if you can reach the shoreline of communication success with this language it's a thrill you won't regret.
Please correct any Russian language mistakes I make.

German is so easy. Its like retarded english.

Anyways, Russian isn't that bad, and college classes are a joke, so i don't think you'll have that hard of a time.

You said that you took German classes in high school.Keep learning German and improve it more .If you won't use Russian in any way, learning Russian doesn't attribute much to you. Also i think Russian can not be learned in a short while, you need to study hard to learn properly.

German is a lot more useful these days, but if you have some special attachment to Russia or something by all means go for it. It's not THAT hard...

Uhm well no. I can't remember the last time I saw a german immgrant anywhere in America, though you can see thousands of Russian immagrants in any state. If you want to work for companies like Microsoft or Boeing or Fed Ex or UPS, or an oil company at a corperate level... Russian would be just as important of a language to speak as Chinese or Japanese. German is in FAR less demand. Mostly because, for the most part, people already speak a good deal of english by year 13 in Germany. When i was there i only met ONE person who couldnt speak english to some degree. Others spoke fluent english having stayed a year or more abroad. Sometimes it was even hard to believe that these people were Germans, seeing as they could speak to me using all the slang and with no accent.

Russia on the other hand has a far far lesser number of people who speak english, or speak it well/ have a formal education in it... And the market for selling things to Russia has a much bigger potential.

I can see the future of someone majoring in German as a future highschool german teacher.

I have been wanting to finish my German but am afraid that I will not be able to keep up with Russian if I do and I want russian to be the main language I know. I also want to do Spanish but I don't think I could handle three languages at once. Anyone here have thoughts on that?

Russian. Russian girls are hotter than German girls. If the choice was between Russian and Swedish, then maybe it would be a tougher decision.
