Tapestries in every home?
My friend was showing me pictures of his family when he lived in the Ukraine and the one thing I noticed is that in every picture that was taken indoors, whether it was his family, or friends' house they all had tapestries hanging on many of the walls.
When I look at Russian photos on the web I see this as well.
Is there a practical purpose for hanging these (like for keeping the homes warmer) or is this simply tradition?

Back in USSR it was a sign of wealth :) Now it's only a tradition, inertness of thought, maybe. When tapestries were not only expensive but hard to get also people didn't want them to be stepped on so they hanged them to the walls instead :) Maybe some 30-40 years ago there was a sense to keep warmth in but now it's unnesessary.

I don't think it was the reason, since people had tapestries on the floor as well. ;)
But it's true that the tapestry on the wall was one of the signs of good living, and often the first thing people bought for their new apartment were furniture and these tapestries.
It's considered somewhat outdated for the last 10-15 years, and younger generations, going for the 'western' interior design, tend to break this tradition. You still can see a lot of wall tapestries in older apartments, though.

The purpose is to collect dust.

sometimes its better to just say its style, no matter how weird. Like in America. Why do you have all those shutters (sp?) outside near your windows? What purpose do those serve? it always confuses me!
