Stress (accent) mark

I've noted people make bold the vowels in stressed syllables. There is a simpler way, a special character that you put after a stressed vowel. It is shown by all the modern browsers correctly.

So here it is.

It isn't standing alone in the text and there is some unusual behaviour when you try to highlight it, but you can copy it together with the 2 neibour letters:

и́р

and then del and backspace the и and р, and the sign will automtically jump to the preceding letter. It works both for editing textbox and for webpage rendering. My text editor, UltraEdit 9.10 also handles it correctly.

By viewing the source for this page, we can see that it uses character 769 in octal.

So you can go into a decent unicode-aware text editor (such as Microsoft Word) and add accents by holding down the ALT key and typing 769 on the numeric keypad.

For example: In Word, type the letter "a". Then hold down the ALT key, type 769 on the numeric keypad, and then release the ALT key. The "a" changes to "á".

Too bad the text editor inside Internet Explorer doesn't handle it, so the ALT trick doesn't work when replying in the forum. But if you copy some text containing that accent mark and paste it into the Reply editbox, you can cursor around to see just where the accent mark is represented, and then copy only that character to the clipboard. Then you can paste the accent mark just after a latin character you want to accent, or BEFORE a cyrillic character. I don't know why the behavior is different.

In my Opera ALT+769 also works correctly, but this is what I get when I type ALT+769 in UltraEdit: те☺ст

Interesting. Maybe there can be some way to enter it in a browser.

BTW: detail, the stress signs must be placed ON the vowels, like in Tom's message.

I know that, but Tom's message is rendered in my browser as больш́ое (the mark over the consonant ш), because the sign was printed before the vowel о, not after. I mean that you need to print ALT+769 after the vowel. If you want to print "большо́е", you print большо then ALT+769 (after the stressed letter) then е.

Hello, browser incompatibility :)
I see the stresses correctly (i.e. on "o" in "bol'shoe") in Tom's message, but in your messages they are always on the following letter (i.e. on "t" in "privet"). This is in both IE (6.0.2900.2180 XP SP2) and Firefox (1.5.0.1).

It's very high and a bit to the right.

In which browser? There it is printed after the vowel. :) As I noticed, it worked even in MSIE.

You can type cyrillic! You have to set your windows language setting to be able to type it though. Or maybe you have an encoding problem?

Oh, I can type Cyrillic into anything else (with some stumbling, heh. Permanent marker my arse.), just not into Opera 8 anymore. My Opera 9 preview does it fine; guess I'll just have to stick to Notepad until it goes final.

Well I use Opera 8.54 and it works fine... strange.
