A very sad date in the modern history. Many ill processes started that day. Many good ones ended. The world had changed then to worse.

На свете есть много идиотов, и не стоит обращать на них внимание. Хотя, надо признать, что совсем уж невиноватой в том, что произошло, Америку назвать нельзя. Но погибшие люди тут, конечно, не причём, и их очень жалко.

My learning about the tragedy was probably the most weird:
I came home from the uni, turned on TV and was going to watch my favourite show "ER" and saw those burning buildings (they were showing it without any comments). The first moment I saw it I thought: "What is this? Is it true?" Then I thought "Of course it isn't true. It's just an ER episode. How stupid of me was to think that it's true". And then for some minutes I was really sure it was an ER episode and was expecting for the ER characters to appear and to take care of the injured. After waiting for a while and seeing that this doesn't happened I started to realize that I was wrong and asked my granny what's going on and she told me everything.

That's kind of interesting, in terms of how the media coverage differed. CNN replayed their coverage (and they still are -- it runs all day today in "real time" as a tribute to 5 years ago, in case you are interested) and they, even though they were in obvious shock at first, NEVER quit talking. There was always audio, most of it the announcer or some interview. And it was as if they HAD to have some sort of audio, since they were grabbing whoever they could to talk. They interviewd their own vice-president at one moment and the next they were talking to some random guy who'd called in on his mobile. Mine was weird too.
My co-workers and I worked till late that day and were absolutely content. Suddenly late at night some man who worked in the same building burst into our room yelling: "Hey, don't you know anything?" Well, we said "no". So he enlightened us: some country attacked Great Britain and London now is suffering from air bombardment. He said he heard it with his own ears (damned loony!). We were scared sh*tless, because it meant probably the third world war in Europe. I rushed at home to watch TV and then I heard about this tragic event. It was probably selfish but at first I was really relieved that it was "just" an act of terrorism but not the "real" war.
Though I'm very sorry for those who died that day and for their relatives.

Lingvo says "garbled version, misinterpretation." Which is a nice way of saying there isn't really a comparable term. But with that being said, I understand the phrase completely, since sometimes your teacher would want to illustrate this effect (the idea that people forming a chain to relay a statement would inevitably completely screw it up. I would say "Gromozeka has a cold and won't be at school" and 15 people later it would be "Greg is cold and dead at the pool.") We always called this something like "the telephone game" or the "pony express."

Thanks, I had problems with, well, basurero's teacher. It didn't quite got to me what were you referring to.

It would not surprize me if there are a lot of teachers like Basueros in NZ and Australia!
