I was reading an Eyewitness book about Russia and it was interesting to learn that Russians delight in their weekly steam baths (banya).

....I learned that in larger cities, there are steam baths located in every district where people can go to steam their bodies to extreme temperatures. I am curious as to whether people steam bath in private, or with other strangers?

A brown bear with an AK-47, a total stranger with a garlic and vodka breath, may grab you right in the street and take you to a steam baths to steam his and your body to extreme temperatures. But as this happens only once a week (the rest of the week bears don't wash), you are advised to stay indoors on Sundays, on work days you'll be just fine. I wonder if there is a similar tradition in Canada and if grizzly bears enjoy steam bathing with humans just like our brown bears do.

I can think off dozens cases when a bunch of naked men in one place wouldn't be a gay orgy. You're unfamiliar with army life I see. They are more close to Finnish sauna than Turkish bath.
Turkish bath has a rather cold steam.
Finnish sauna has a hot dry air.
Russian banya takes the advantages of both.
At the beginning your rise the air temperature just like in a sauna and after some time when temperature decreases a little you add slightly a steam.
After temperature decreases there is a sort of massage procedure using веник.
