Russian forums

I visit a popular english language gaming forum. They have a couple of foreign members who joined a few years ago, and their involvement in the forum has helped them a lot with their english.

I'd like to find a russian speaking forum so I can try something similar.

Of course, this site is great, but it focuses on topics about Russian, Russia, or the language learning process. Sometimes these topics get boring and I want to move away from them and read or discuss everyday things, in Russian.

What are some of the most popular russian speaking forums? I'm looking for big forums that discuss all kinds of topics, and a popular gaming forum too.

how about forum.ixbt.com? This is computer-related forum, so there is hardware\software\games threads, and some nice offtopic too. They have pretty strong moderation, so there is not so many idiots there...

Not a group, but anyway: I have a page in V Kontakte. It is a Russian clone of Facebook, with thousands of groups on every possible interesting topic. Even if I am an absolute beginner of Russian, I'm able to interact (cheating with online translation...).

It has some 8 million (?) members, most of which young students.

Hey author). If you are a gamer like me and want to discuss about games(mostly but not the only thing) in Russian especially about MMO(massive multiplayer online) I would recommend Goha forum. This forum is very popular among Russians gamers(one of the most popular MMO forums) and I hope it will be very helpful and entertaining for you to talk in -). :wink:

Actually now you can enter anything you want if it's not on the list. Facebook is currently being translated into Russian. I am participating in the translation (it's actually open to all users). It's still in the initial stages, like users submit possible translations of key terms like Wall, Profile, Account, Notes, Posted Items, Friend Request, etc., then people vote for which one they think sounds best. Once that is done, the rest of the site will be translated in the same way. Some things are really hard to translate, like Wall-to-Wall, which is Тет-а-тет on V Kontakte, but the Russians of facebook don't really like that. Generally they are saying V Kontakte isn't translated that well.

And in the meanwhile V Kontakte is being translated into a wealth of languages, even my Finnish and Italian. Let's hope both will survive.

I have also thought about some of the translations on vkontakte. We on MR could get involved somehow on this. Where is this voting held?

I don't think both should survive. V Kontakte is a clone site, and it's probably infringing on facebook's copyright. Lots of countries have a social network site, many are older than facebook, and at least most are original. V Kontakte, being a clone of facebook sort of won't be necessary once facebook is in Russian.

On the other hand it has millions of registered users, most with an extensive network of friends and groups, which is difficult to leave behind.

While it lacks some good Facebook features (all those applications for example), it has others that Facebook lacks.

vkontake is massive in russia and i dont think it will just disappear when facebook is in russian. i use both but like the fact that on vkontakte you can look at almost anyones profile, it's a bit more interesting in that respect

"Facebook" won't be popular among Russians because it's ubermad about privacy... And we don't respect this thing as Westerners do.

I don't think it's all about privacy which we certaily don't respect. Just in Russia we prefer to make our own projects with similar services. Linkedin - Мой Круг, Classmates - Одноклассники, Facebook - Вконтакте, Youtube - Rutube etc. It's because it's easier for FSB to have full control over them. We even bought Russian part of Livejournal to have more control. So Facebook has no chance to become popular in Russia. Like a year ago or maybe even earlier Myspace came to Russia but I didn't hear it become any popular.

By the way does Вконтакте support groups, is there MasterRussian there? I remember MA created a group on Myspace but only few people joined it for some reason and there was no discussions there. Is Вконтакте any better?

For sure, it supports groups. We have a small circle of forumites there. I can't say it's created for promotion, just for us to stay in touch.
