    Moscow Circus School

I want to go the Moscow State University of Circus and Variety Arts. I know it exists and admits foreigners. But I can't even find a phone number. Can anyone help? Here is a link to an article about the school:

    Thanks

It is called "Государственное училище циркового и эстрадного искусства." It is not an university, it is just a professional school, and you won't get a degree there (not even BA, as far as I know).

    Phones in Moscow: 214-6330, 212-7121. Fax: 214-6249.

However, I doubt that having the phone numbers will do you any good without knowing Russian.

A university if you're a normal American. An university if you're a snobby British professor.

Usually you use "an" when the following word begins with a vowel.
    Example: an apple, an umbrella.
Edit: an apple, an egg, an indian, an orange, an umbrella.

But "university" is an exception. You say "a university" because the "u" is a long. Notice "university" is pronounced "YOOniversity" and "umbrella" is pronounced "UMbrella".

I guess if you think about it the "u" here in university is not really functioning as a vowel in this case.

Thanks for the help! I was hoping to find someone who speaks Russian to call for me. At least I have the phone numbers now. And I am looking forward to hearing about the person who actually attended.

As for "a university" versus "an university" BlackMage is correct. This is actually a difference between American and British English. Americans say "a university" while Britons say "an university." Personally, I don't care if it's a university or not. Performers don't need degrees.

I have never heard yet an Englishman say "an university" or anyone else for that matter. That would be really dumb not to metion hard to pronounce. A load of bollocks, I say.

Btw, in official press-releases of the Microsoft corporation or something, you can find phrases such as "a SQL file", "a SQL server" and so on. The matter is that the abbraviation SQL is pronounced as "sequel" or, may be, "seek well".

C'mon. It wasn't exactly gold, but it was worth a few giggles.

I'm sorry there is still no news.
So in this case no news is bad news.

    But I shall insist.

    a university

It's a university because in this case the vowel "u" is actually not a vowel sound. Would be transcribed as "yu". Which is considered to be something called a liquid "u" and is thought of as a consonant sound.

    Sorry to go off-topic.
