Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
So, my sixth grader came home last night with a summary page of several countries “The Economic – Political Connection” and asked me if the summary was true about Russia. I also noticed one about the UK and as we have many people on the forum from the UK, I figured I would post both of them and ask for your feedback and comments.
Just so you know... this information was written by the County School System in 2007, and NOT the teacher or from a text book.
Please try to respond in English if you can… if not… would someone please translate any Russian for me?
Thanks, Rockzmom
Quote:
Russia (R)
Russia was previously known as the Soviet Union and had an authoritarian Communist government. In 1991 the Soviet command economy fell apart and government leaders lost power as new leaders came to power. Since then, the nation has been experimenting with democracy and a market economy. However, many industries are still owned by the government and people expect the government to provide health care and other services they were used to having under Communism. The Russian economy has struggled to prosper with its new mixed-market system and recently the new president of Russia has been enforcing laws that limit freedom of the press
Quote:
United Kingdom (UK)
The United Kingdom, better known as Britain, has a long tradition of democracy and a market economy. However, in the 1950s, leaders were elected who promised to provide more services to the poor. The British government-run soon took over all health care and many other industries such as railroads. In the 1980s, people complained that the government-run industries and services were not doing a good enough job. Recently, the British government returned some of these industries to private ownership. The debate goes on in democratic Britain about whether or not government control is helpful to some industries.

Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
I just want to state that Russia was not "previously known as the Soviet Union". It was a part of the Soviet Union, along with 14 OTHER COUNTRIES. Seems like a significant difference to me.

gRomoZeka, Thank you VERY much for that clarification.
BTW, I thought the first thing would be about the phrase...

...other services they were used to having under Communism.
Especially since on another thread you had written...

Oh, I just missed this. :)
I'm so used to this trend of calling everything having to do with USSR "Communistic" that I kinda block it out without noticing. It's my "doublethink" vs their "doublespeak". :D
Semantics aside, everything else seems pretty much true, though the choice of facts presented surprised me a little (namely "freedom of the press" part, I find it somewhat weird that of all things that happend which they could try to cram into the six lines paragraph, they chose this one to stress. Looks a little like deliberately creating a certain image, imho).

Explaining to a westerner that there never was Communism as such, and nobody here ever clamed it to exist as an accomplished thing, is like banging your head against a brick wall. :wall: They just seem unable to grasp this idea.

Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
I would also add that the author appears to be letting his politics show through. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that he is not in favor of government-run health care. Not only does he associate it with Communism, but does not omit to mention that people complain about it in England.
That stands out to me, at least.

You're talking about people who can't even grasp the relatively simple fact that Russia and Ukraine are not the same country. What do you expect?

E-learner,
But aren't you all just pleased as punch that I have learned this? Me, the one who only knew that you find the biggest thing on the map, write USSR on it, and you get at least that part of the map test correct!
Now I need to go forth and spread the news... of course, USSR is not any longer and your flag has changed when I was not looking! :spiteful:

No Matroskin Kot, you have it all wrong.... you are talking about people who when they heard about the Russian invasion/conflict of Georgia, they thought Georgia... as in Atlanta. Not Georgia... as in the Country.

That's my point, he implies that there are laws against freedom of the press, knowing that nobody (certainly not 12 year-olds) is going to check. Besides, I'm sure he thinks it is true, after all, "it's Russia". Everybody knows they hate Freedom. :fool"

I would be interested to know what you russian fellows think of the utchebnik described in this article : http://www.polit.ru/analytics/2008/10/15/history.html
This is somehow reciprocal to the topic of this thread.

Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
IMHO the texts are too short and primitive to be adequate to some intricate and ambiguous terms they use (like communism, democracy, market economy etc.). And I don't think they can be either interesting or useful for children.

Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
and the stuff about the UK is pretty laughable.
privatisation had nothing to do with people 'complaining' about nationalised industries. It was a policy of the Thatcher government driven by ideology, not democracy.... many people were against it but, because of the way the British electoral system works, one party can gain more or less unlimited power with less than 40% of the vote. Privatisation was deeply unpopular at the time.
Some of the privatisations were beneficial, many were not, but the driving force was certainly not public opinion
-
Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
the texts are too short really, but considering they're meant for kids, that's not sot surprising. the info on the UK is ok in my opinion, just short. it is strange that the author included the part about the free press in the bit about Russia.
on a side note, i think our NHS is a good thing, although people bitch endlessly about it, plus we have excellent private hospitals so it's not like they have no choice
-
Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
Those summaries are comical. There's nothing in them that is necessarily untrue per se, but they reek of ideological bias. Are sixth-grade textbooks in the US routinely provided by the Heritage Foundation?
Still, I suppose it's never too early to start a citizen's economic indoctrination. It makes the job Fox News has to do later on so much easier.

Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
To everyone who has posted their views... I am thrilled and if others still want to chime in, please do so! Your comments have been great! They also on the same little handout had summaries of Japan and Cuba... but I don't think we have any natives from those places on this forum.
Just so you have the complete picture... here is her assignment:
Quote:
Directions: Use the country cards provided by your teacher and follow the steps below to determine where on the economic and political continuums each country belong.
1. Underline economic information on each card and mark it with an E.
2. Underline polictical information on each card and mark it with a P.
3. Discuss where each country should go on the economic continuum. Come to group consensus and mark the continuum.
4. Repeat step 3 for political continuum.
5. Discuss any pattern you see between the economic and political systems of each country.
6. Itentify which principle gives a generalization about this pattern.
 Also, if any of you REALLY smart people have an easy way for me to explain the word CONTINUUM to a very visual 11 year old, please let me know as I have yet to be able to help her understand this one.
it-ogo, and you thought words like "communism, democracy, market economy" were intricate and ambiguous terms!!! :spiteful:
-
Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
Tell her a continuum is like a smooth range or gradient between two colours that lets you see whether a mixture of those two colours is more like the first one or more like the second one, except that a continuum can be about more than just colours, it can also be about ideas, or numbers, or any other values.
This is a continuum, because you can choose any shade of grey between black and white:
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/8595/conty.jpg
And this isn't a continuum, because the choices between black and white are separate and distinct and there are lots of possible shades of grey missing:

+1 "Continuum" can be explained to 11-er. +1 this term is absolutely not needed there. And I feel like this word has not been explained to the author of that text. :D I am not happy of the way it is used there. Actually after reading those texts I feel like their purpose is to educate a human who can fluently use a plenty of smart words without actual understanding their meanings. A brainless speaker.

Why, sure! You already has been told about some meanings of the word "communism". As for "democracy" I am still unable to understand what is it. "Republic" is OK, "representation" is OK, but "democracy"... :search:

I had never heard this one before and between you and gRomoZeka's HOUSE, MD thread my hubby keeps wondering why I am laughing so much at the computer!
gRomoZeka,
Your drawing is perfect for a visual student... even an old one like me can understand this!
Ya' know... it looks very much like the ones from your HOUSE, MD thread. Just throw in a cane and some vicodin pills ... could you be the mystery artist??

Aw, thank you, rockzmom! I am really flattered. :yahoo:
But it's not me. I'm not THAT funny (I wish!). *sighs*

They always use this "under Communism", I suppose it rather means soviet period in context then a social order.

All these services were and are provided, they just had lack of financing at 90-s.

Re: Russia & UK from 6th History Class - Comments?
Everyone,
So I sent an email to my daughter's teacher and here was his response about the project:
Quote:
It is remarkable how these concepts (some of which I wasn’t introduced to until college!) are part of the 6th grade curriculum. For the record, the students were provided with a visual of a continuum, along with an explanation. It’s basically a scale/straight line (like from 1 to 10), with opposite concepts on each end. The economic continuum has command on one end and market on the other, and the political continuum has authoritarian on one end and democratic on the other. The case studies of each country are supposed to reveal the pattern that countries with command economic systems tend to have authoritarian political systems and countries with market economic systems tend to have democratic political systems.
I must say, gRomoZeka, scotcher & Matroskin Kot.. you helped me to understand way better... because even after all the explanations... I am lost with all the BIG words in his email!
He assures me that my daughter understands now and that is all that matters.
I guess I just like pretty pictures and Power Point way too much! :D

What he is saying here is basically that the point of the exercise was to demonstrate that socialism is inherently bad, and that the case studies were chosen specifically to underline this point.
I'm not a socialist (well, I probably am by a US calibration, but that's hardly difficult), but I would be outraged if any school or teacher tried to indoctrinate my son in this way.

We had a command economic system with fixed prices and it came to this:

than prices became the market ones. Now, we have a market economic system that came to the economic crisis but the political system is a democratic one.

You should've mentioned that Gorbachev's reforms where the cause of those things you see on your photo. Before him there've been some problems in finding certain things but that was minor.

Trees sway and cause the wind. http://www.wtrg.com/prices.htm He was just unlucky to meet the twofold oil price drop.
