    Why do you learn Russian?

    Why do you learn Russian?

There are many reason why not to learn Russian:
    1. The language talked only in Russia and maybe other countries that near to it.
    2. Russia is not exotic place which think about to travel to it like south America or east Asia and Russia is cold country.

I start to learn only because most of the workers in my department are Russian, and they talking each other in Russian

    What are yours reasons?

Believe me, it is overestimated grossly.
And, by the way, Russia is very big.

It's not a good enough reason IMO.

People are different. nadavvin doesn't need to travel nor he is interested in this. A stay-at-home?

To answer nadavvin's question I am learning Russian because I like to learn about a lot of different cultures and languages.

Maybe Americans are "starved for culture" or something.

I can only assume you're not intersted in Russian language, nor in Russia itself. Therfore, I'm afraid it'll be really hard or even impossible to learn the language.
You should try to find some other incentive except the "unfortunate" circumstances of working with Russians.

    1. The language talked only in Russia and maybe other countries that near to it.
    2. Russia is not exotic place which think about to travel to it like south America or east Asia and Russia is cold country.
May be you will feel better, knowing that Russian is not so absolutely useless as you may think:

    1. About 170 millions of people speak Russian (mostly in Russia and former Soviet republics (14+ countries)). It' s 7th most popular language in the world.
Compare it with Japanese (125 mln), German (98 mln) and French (72 mln).

    2. Russian can come in handy not only in Russia. Quite a lot of older people from contries of former social camp (some African countries, Eastern Europe, former Eastern Germany, Cuba, etc.) know some Russian, they studied it at school.

And there are plenty of Russian immigrants all over the world, and sometimes it's nice to know what they say. Um, wait, you already know that.

Yes!! So I wished to write the same!

Yes I've just teased Rtyom friendly for being born on the German soil.

Excuse me for interrupting, but your question about Russia, though being asked with so sinsere interest, seems astonishing to me. My native language is Russian and I was born here for some reasons, and I assure you Russian IS one of the most widespread languages on the Globe.

It stands on the seventh place after Chinese, Spanish, English, Bengali (I really do not know how to spell them right :P ), Hindu and Portugese.
It IS almost as widespread as German, French and Italian all together!
It is spoken on 1\6 part of the inhabited land.

Russia has almost all kinds of landscapes. It has without doubts many exotical regions - like Kamchatka. Or Crimea (though it formally belongs to Ukrain), Ural and many many others.
