I know what the article says, that is why I said OOps... but отечетво derives from the word отец (rather, both those words derive from the same root), so it really means the Fatherland. Родина is the motherland... Just ironical, that's all

OK OK OK, so I don't speak German. I don't believe everything I read either ( including you TATY ).
I also heard it called by a few names by some 'net-pals', Motherland was what they called it as well as Army Day.
I have also learned that even though it was a day off, some office people in Moscow had to "make up the day" today, Sunday Like that would really go over well in the States. I'll take my 3 day weekend, thank you.
My teacher friend still had to give private tutoring (OK, she was preparing some students for an academic competition the next day)
My hockey fan friends said it was a great day to party, and the Russian Olympic hockey team was so hung-over they lost the next day.
These are just GENERAL observations, that's all. Lighten up gang.

It used to be officially called Red Army Day, I believe. But the point is the word Отечество is a neuter noun, and shares the same root with the word for father (Отец), and Patronymic (Отчество). So really there is no suggest of 'Mother' anywhere.

Well, maybe it is just that in English we refer to the native land as motherland, and that is how they translate it...

Do Americans really call America the "motherland" often though? I don't think it's a thing Enlgish speakers do.

If you say Fatherland, everyone is going to understand what it means anyway.

They say homeland.

I dunno, Stalin screams "Ahhh, motherland!" in that "End of the World" flash video.

Родина I think is OK as motherland. Since there is the rod- root, and the feminine ending.

February 23 Protector of Motherland Day
Next is February 23, Day, known until recently as Soviet Army Day, popularly viewed as holiday for all men and closely followed by its female counter-part, Women's Day, March 8, when women receive flowers, presents and are toasted by men.
