It would be nothing but utter coolness if you were to live there for a while, DDT!!!

It's on the border Bashkiriya and Tatariya on the M5 federal road. I've never been in the town, but a couple of times I stayed for a night near it. Try to use yandex.ru for more information.Originally Posted by DDT

I lived in Tatarstan quite close to that place. it is a deep province, in the finest sense of this word
So, is it Russian culture or not? I would hate to have to start learning Tartar now. And it would be terrible if I got there only to find that there were no bars to get my favorite alcoholic beverage at due to everyone being Muslim or something.

you will find that everybody there speaks Russian because the Russians are at least a half of population. The culture - I would call it not Russian and not Bashkir but Soviet.
Religion in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan is very tolerant, Bashkirs and Tatars are not tempered Caucasian and Arabic Muslims.
You can be beaten and robbed like everywhere else, but it will not be russian mafia, bashkir mafia or muslim terrorists
A rat hole, I'd call it Try Saint-Petersburg, it's much better .

Are you going alone, DDT, or with a local Russian? Or is it some kind of school? From the limited experience I have had traveling to remote locations is
A) Knowing somebody is very helpful
B) People are suspicious of outsiders
C) Despite B, you will be very popular as foreigners don't come that often (popular in a good and bad way)
D) people are very friendly
E) speaking decent Russian is essential
Of course things are probably different in different places, please tell what you find out!

Yep! If I go, I will be going alone.......as I always travel.....for 6 months. But I will be picked up in Ufa by a hot chick........but she is married.... too bad! She is the administrator of the school there. So no need to worry! I will just take a hefty supply of vegemite and everything will be fine.

6 months?! That's LONG!
BTW, are you going to vizit the Urals? What do you think about Chelyabinsk and E-burg? It's not far from Ufa, just about 400-700 km to the east and north-east?Originally Posted by DDT

Probably fly to Ufa from Moscow. Then drive by car to Octyabrsky. So if I visit E.burg and the Urals it will be on the week-ends. But as I said before, it is not certain that I will even make this trip yet. There may not be enough time left to organize the arrangements and it is still possible that this job will be called off.Originally Posted by JJ

I hope you'll have enough time to make a trip to E-burg. E-burg is one of the smallest cities with population over 1 mln people. (~1.3 mln). The last Russian Tsar was killed there. Will you miss a chance to vizit this outstanding city?Originally Posted by DDT
