New Forum Poll

Okay, there's been some recent discussion in the "Translate This!" forum which revealed some people's discontent with the fact that a lot of people come here and post rather intimite messages to be translated for their significant other. One idea raised was to create a new forum, which would in effect be the place where people could post questions like this. So, what does everybody think? New forum or not?

I think though, that you're missing the point here. Whiny bastards like TATY and I (well, I shouldn't speak for TATY, but for me at least this is true) oppose such things based on TWO considerations: a) it's farking annoying as hell, but MORE importantly, b) it's absolutely RIDICULOUS on principle. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON that this forum should aid and abet both the scammers and the scammees. I think that you'd find no one really objecting to someone who wants to say, translate a poem for their wife who is from Ukraine as a Valentine's suprise or for some guy wanting to correspond with a pen pal or whatever. What people object to is the knuckleheads who think that a)it's cool to "buy" love overseas because a)they're losers and b) they can, as well as the scumbags who run these things. It's absolutely reprehensible. So no, I think that to further validate such idiots with their own forum is nuts.

Exactly.

Some of these romantic translations look like people are being scammed, or are scamming others. Like one guy who asked us to translate the infamous "I want to cling to you like your underwear", was trying to get photos of some girl in Russia to "send to model agencies".

Also it is just annoying, the number of them we get. Yes we can just ignore them. But the Translate This section is getting full of them.

Relationships shouldn't be conducted through an interpreter, and even worse, broadcasted on the internet. There is one guy, EasyGoingGuy (which itself looks like it came straight form a lonely hearts ad), who keeps asking for translations of intimate messages from Russian to English and vice versa. Obviously the person they don't have a mutual language between them.

It's the principal. Do the people sending the messages know that other people are posting them all over the net?

Once, the underwear guy even seemed to be asking for the translation of a message that wasn't even for him, liked he hacked someone's e-mail account or something.

Well, look at our options. We could A) Put something in the FAQ or Forum Rules about not posting romantic translations. But, the people who come here to ask these sorts of things probably don't take the time to read either the FAQ or Rules, as they obviously don't do a simple search to see if "I love you" has been translated.

Option B) Take on a few more moderators to constantly moniter the site and take down frivelous translations. Seems boring and impractical.

Or, option C) Create a forum for this so that people like Barmaley and TATY who seem to have a big problem with these questions don't have to look at them.

On another note, while I agree that it's pretty sophomoric to buy a bride who you can't talk to, I think it's a mistake to conclude that all people who post sappy phrases to translate are doing it for a mail-order bride.

No, no, no....you're exactly right. I don't doubt that there are some people who have wholly legitimate reasons -- I just think that they're in the minority and, typically, speaking easy enough to spot. Like I said above, no problem with this...

I honestly don't see the problem, just skip the posts that you know are full of sap! After all this is a free Internet, and as long as they aren't spamming in the true sense, I don't see why we should censor them just because someone thinks it is too mushy...

I don't care, but the lonely hearts are some great comedic relief. The guy from Pakistan that wanted to pop his cherry was a "top-ten" funniest thing. Sometimes it is fun to watch someone getting scammed too... "russian bride scam", google that if you have some time... I read them with the maids at work, they can't stop laughing, I get cards from them that I should post some day.
