    Muslims in the USSR

I've read alot about the church in the USSR, but I was wondering what the state's views were on Russia's, and the other republics' huge Muslim population?

And today in Russia are there tensions between them, like say in Tatarstan which is the centre of Russian Islam (or so I read), but is also a largely Christian and Atheist area?

Aren't Russian muslims like Turkish muslims, like not that orthodox and strict. I watched a documentary on Chechnya and it said the Islamic tradtion of the area allowed alcohol, and wasn't that strict, but then people from Afganistan and those places started going there and converting people to there type of Islam, which forbids alcohol and requires women to wear the hijab.

I have seen a minaret (a muslims church) in Ivanovo (pure russian region). However inhabitants look at it suspiciously.

I have also seen many "islamic organizations" in russian cities, but not islamic churches.

Hmmm well let's see the most famous example would be Chechn... oh shiat. Nevermind.
Call to a hardware store: "I'm sure you know more about the caulk than I do...tell me...is there a taste to the caulk?".

mosque = the Muslim church itself (as TATY said).

minaret = slender turrent at the side of the mosque. (Basically, it's just a part of a mosque).

I thought 'minaret' refered to the round, twirly shape ontop the mosque, till I checked the dictionary. Like a pyramid that got air pumped into its a@@. But I guess not. I guess that shape is simply called the 'onion shape'.

That's different cos Chechnya is triyng to assert it's independance. I wsa mostly interested in Tatarstan which doesn't have a strong nationalist movement.

The muslims in Tatarstan are very nice and friendly people. I have never heard of any clashes.
