I am from and currently living in the Washington, DC area of the United States (yet I have lived in many areas of the U.S.).
I started out on this forum because my daughter wanted me to write a novel for her and the main character was Russian and I wanted to make certain I had the details about him correct and all sorts of little tidbits in the book that only REAL Russians would know to make it interesting for her.
I have stayed here long after I thought I would leave because the people on this forum are great! They are very friendly and knowledgeable about a variety of topics. This has become my go-to place for most any question and in exchange I try to help out with questions about English and topics that I might actually have knowledge about.
The cross culture and knowledge base on here is second to none!
I only speak two languages, English and bad English.

I am from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Well, not originally, but I have lived here for 23 years. I love Russian, I am a big fan. Have visited Russia several times, planning a trip again, next Spring. I like learning about the language (I have taught Russian and worked as a translator) and also helping people learn about English, tho I am a bit weak in grammar there =:^( .
Today was my last day at work, and now every day is going to be Saturday for me! I will try not to spend an inordinate time on this forum and EFL.

I'm living in north Florida, USA. We also have a place in the Virginia mountains, in my Dad's home county.
As I've shared elsewhere, my mother was Russian, and I have the fond hope of learning the language someday, in between lots of other projects. Mom never taught us Russian, since she had grown up under Stalin, and came over here when Senator Joe McCarthy was running a big Communist scare, and she knew oppression when she saw it...I was raised with "you don't know how lucky you are," together with "Americans are so spoiled."
She also taught me things she learned in Russia as a child which are only now becoming mainstream here; for example, Americans may turn off their lights to save money. She taught me to turn off the lights so the city wouldn't have to produce as much electricity.
BTW, I may have a chance to visit St Petersburg, which Mom said was the most beautiful city she'd ever seen, for a few days this summer. I would love some suggestions on safe, inexpensive places to stay, and great things to see or do, beyond the obvious tourist things which I can probably find on my own. Спасибо!
Correct my Russian, please! Пожалуйста, исправьте мои ошибки!

I live at the New Jersey shore (we call it the Jersey shore here) 90 miles south of New York City. My grandfather was from Ukraine and my grandmother from Belarus. That is what got me started in learning this crazy, interesting, wacky, fascinating language. I hope one day to visit .

Chaika congrats on the retirement and you live in an interesting part of the US for sure. We look forward to seeing more of you here....
Great stories! Hopefully if we keep the thread for a specific country/location people will have more opportunities to connect with each other. Perhaps even meet in real life. So far we have:
Washington, DC
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
North Florida, USA
New Jersey shore

I live in St. Paul area of Minnesota but i have lived in Florida and Pennsylvania.
I joined the forum because of my starting to learn the Russian language and this site is second to none for advice on the Russian language. I've been learning Russian because i'm fasinated by the language. I'm planning on studying Russian in Moscow this Summer.

Hey, Mike, your signature doesn't make sence. I can't even guess what exactly you wanted to say to correct you.Originally Posted by SouthsideRMK

This has been done before but I will tell you again.
I live on Cape Cod and we get some J-1 visa kids every year. About 10 years ago, I met a girl on a bicycle that was looking at a map and crying. I was a "White Knight" and helped her find her way. I started to learn Russian. Since then, I have been a host for a few kids and worked with many. "PRIVET, KAK DILA" were the first things I learned and they are still the first things I say to J-1 kids. Some are scared, homesick and look like deer in headlights when they first arrive, but they all are sad to go home at the end of the season. I am called MAT and MAMA even though I am an man. (I know!) I speak Russian poorly but well by October.
I have many places to visit in Russia and all my "kids" say their home is the best.
I'm easily amused late at night...
I am in Nottingham Maryland (more commonly known as Baltimore County Maryland). I am originally from NJ.
I started here for a few reasons.
1. Because I belong to a dance studio that is owned by Belorussians and often was given words or phrases that I needed help translating/understanding.
2. The language fascinates me (it is just beautiful to my ears)
3. Recently found out my heritage is Romanian and Russian
4. Something about the russians I have met just resonates deep in me. I can not seem to explain it. It FEELS as if I have come home!
I keep coming back here because the people are nice. =)
Howdy -
Born and bred in Massachusetts. I ended up working for a company with a lot of Russians, fell in love with the language, spent a summer living in the country last year and from that made some really deep connections. Since I'm a bit of a mutt I'm adopting Russian as my chosen ethnicity
I don't have much time these days to surf the forum but it's still a great place to find answers to all your Russian questions, and pick up a few tips on good Russian movies too.

Wow, it seems there are a bunch of people from Jersey in here. So am I. I live in East Brunswick, and go to school in New Brunswick, at Rutgers University.
I love Russian literature, and I'm getting into the music, as well. I have many Russian friends, and I'm very interested in languages, in general.

Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!
