Good Russian/English Online Dictionaries and Websites

I am a graduate student in Japanese History at a major U.S. University, and have recently started studying Russian as part of my ongoing research (involving Japan-Russian relations). I have been looking for a good website with an online dictionary, and while I have found some, none are very good. Can anyone suggest one that is high-quality and (hopefully) easy to use? I'm still in the beginning phase, but am hoping to continue studying for a long time, and am looking for good resources. Much thanks in advance!

    -Ben

    Great online Eng-Rus & Rus-Eng dictionary:
    http://multitran.ru/
    (other languages are also available).

What do you mean by not very good? Why you didn't like them?

I usually use this one for translation:
    http://slovari.yandex.ru/

And I can suggest using this one when you want to know the gender, the Russian definitions or the correct accent (I mean, to know which syllable is stressed):

For declensions and other morphology I can recommend http://starling.rinet.ru/morph.htm
(warning: stress there is marked with an apostrophe _after_ stressed vowel, not before stressed syllable)

But it's (being?) made the same way that Wikipedia, isn't it?
I use it only for terms I cannnot find elsewhere (military, zoology and so on).

I'm not sure what you mean. There are ALL kind of words, common words as well. Users can add words and meanings, but it's monitored, and I think that the base was taken from some conventional paper edition.
All professional translators use this dictionary, and I have never heard of any serious mistakes in it. One of the advantages of this dictionary is that it's huge, with loads of modern vocabulary, and vocabulary from all kinds of professional areas, as you mentioned.

PS. Ah, I've found some info in Википедия: "Multitran is created by scanning and processing of a large number of paper dictionaries" (c), so no worries.

Some advice from another topic (though it's mainly about dictionary software):

http://multitran.ru is a little more hip, slangy.

I consider http://starling.rinet.ru/morph.htm invaluable as it gives complete declensions of verbs and nouns (limited translation info though.)

Ok, I could add a number of quotes stating that multitran is the best dictionary currently available, but I'll save space.

Anyway, the words added by other users are clearly marked with their nicks. If you are unsure of their credibility you can just ignore them, and use the info, that was taken from the official and approved paper dictionaries. But this great feature does gives an opportunity to see a lot of synonyms.

(note the nicks in the brackets)

On the downside: it IS a dictionary, nothing more, nothing less. No tips for beginners, no grammar, no lessons.

One more very nice dictionary is ABBY LINGVO ONLINE:
    http://lingvo.abbyyonline.com/en

Another source I have come to rely on is викисловар. I mostly use this for grammatical transformations such as declension, conjugation. It may not be complete, but I find most of the information I need there.
