I'm leaving.
I havn't said anything but I once more enlisted in the military. This time its for real. Im leaving in 2 weeks. I will be going in as an airborne linguist.
I will learn Either Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Or Korean (Or farsi or pashtu or cantonese or tagalog). Of course im hoping for Russian and i will do everything in my power to achieve it. But i've heard that they do not even teach Russian anymore to newcommers because they need more people for 'more important languages'. So i suppose I will just learn whatever language they give me and then Take russian classes in college with the 40,000 dollars Uncle sam is giving me for college.
i will also learn to use 'high(er) tech' communications and satelite and computer equipment. Also since my job will be to FLY around and intercept information, I'll be flying ALL over the world all the time =))).
I've seen they have bases in Uzbekistan, England, and Australia. Those are my top 3 choices for duty!
Anyways so ill be gone for awhile here on Jan 3rd. Hope the party isnt too big when im gone.
-
Good luck, Dogboy! I hope your Russian knowledge will help you - after all who knows where you can come across Russian speaking people. :)
-
Good Luck.
Stay Safe.
Serve your country well!!
(I heard from an Army guy that the Defense Language school (DLI) is a big party zone..)
-
I think that is F'ing great Dog! Hey, you could become, Officer Dogboy! WooHoo!!
Perhaps you will run into a nephew of mine. He just got back from Uzbekistan, stationed at an AFB in N Dakota now. Oh and he has the same first and last name as me Doggie.
Oh and not to metion my niece just enlisted in the Marines two weeks ago under the Linguist program. She like you, is hoping for Russian, since she studied it for three years and took a trip to Moscow and all.
Good Luck, mate!
-
Good going, dogboy! Wow, that is some future. Don't worry about the Russian. If I were you (I know, I'm not) I would be really interested in Arabic, one version or another.
I had a friend who learned Russian at DLI and was stationed in Germany to listen into the Soviets, and his Russian was good.
I am sure with your language skills you will be a first class linguist, whatever the language. Let us know (if you can....)!
-
They grow up so fast.
-
God speed dogboy! Airborne linguist sounds really cool.
Little do you know, but your life will be indirectly in my hands. I build weather satellites for the Air Force :) So, if I see any bad airborn Abu Graib stuff with dogboy's picture on it, don't expect a turbulent free ride.
:D
-
BTW, you can't leave until you beat Pravit's total posts. Hurry up and post!!!
-
-
Bye Dogboy. Have fun! I hope you don't have to go to war.
-
Awww thanks people. You're all so kind to me after i've been so rude to you.
Im sure ill be fine. And as soon as im allowed to have my computer, I'll be back here for sure.
-
-
Though you leave us I hope it woun't be long, Dogboy. Good luck!
-
Stay in touch with us when you can. I want to hear stories from your adventures in your chosen career! There may be others who will be interested in following in your footsteps.
-
Good Luck
When I joined the Army many years ago, scoring in the top 1% on the ASVAB, I joined to be a linquist too, but they never quite got around to sending me to the school.
I know several Blackhawks, that joined for the same reason, never quite making it to the infamous language school.
I hope you actually go, and that the recruiter didn't lie to you, but...you know, one thing that never changes about the military....
Anyway, enjoy your stay. Just be sure not to reinlist and go to college, when the time comes!

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to grunt my reluctant "good luck, lad". :) Use your Russian and keep your arse out of trouble, alright, mate?
-
Watch your six and return home safe to the ones you love.

EDIT
Well I've found a website that lists openings and class dates for the DLI languages. If everything goes acording to plan it looks like I will be getting arabic. Which is fine with me. Id much rather have arabic than chinese.
I think it will be good. I'll be stationed in either Germany or Britian and when i get out I can take college classes for Russian. Think of where all the oil in the world is? Middle east and russia! I will be like solid gold for oil companies! I can smell the briefcases full of money now :D
