An idea of a parallel book in Russian for beginners

When you are already not a beginner but have not mastered the language yet, reading parallel texts is one of the most efficient ways for quickly improving your perception of the written language, as well as building up the vocabulary of words and phrases. However, if you are a beginner, it is often very difficult to find a suitable text for parallel reading: "serious" books are written in a too "advanced" (and often outdated) language, and books written in a simple language tend to be short and for kids (it is not very interesting for an adult to read fairy tales. Well, for most adults). So, beginners have to fight with boring textbooks, grammar rules, tables of endings and exercises in order to get to that medium level when they can start to read anything they want with a dictionary or as parallel texts.
I have an idea of a public domain parallel book for beginners who have already learnt reading rules of Russian.
GOALS:

1. The book must start with a simple language (short phrases and sentences) so that it is very easy to figure out the meaning of words and phrases without using a dictionary.
2. During the course of the book the language must gradually get more and more complicated and, from a certain point, become the standard modern Russian.
3. The book must be big and have a continuous plot line (not a collection of short stories or anecdotes).
4. The book must be interesting for adults.

The most difficult is, of course, the setting and the plot. There's an idea to tell about a life of someone from his early childhood with his experiences (at this stage the simplicity of the language is very natural), and while he/she grows the experiences and the language "grow" with him/her. When the main character is big enough, the language becomes standard unabridged Russian.
The setting is a difficult choice. Either it is a fantasy world or real world (modern Russia). The first can scare away someone (I know many people who dislike fantasy), but the second is much more difficult to make interesting.

This can be a project for several people: writing, translating and later narrating.

I would like to hear your opinions and suggestions.

The outline of the setting and the plot.

Two main characters, a boy and a girl, living and growing in two fictional small Russian towns.
The boy is Андрей Стужин (1986) and the girl is Ирина Карельцева (1987).
Andrey Stuzhin is from Vostochny-4, a closed town with a factory producing kettle handles for the whole Soviet Union (in fact — radar sets for submarines). In 1992 the factory will be closed, the town renamed to Zarechensk, and most of the population left unemployed.
Irina Kareltseva was born in Belyi Brod (Белый Брод), a large district centre in a fictional agrarian oblast.
In 2003 Andrey enters the state university in a large Russian city (name not invented yet) where a year later he meets Irina who's entered the same university in 2004.

If you want to follow the entire life of a person and keep it not boring it will be quite a hard task. Let's add some science fiction to speed up the process: for example make a protagonist not a human but an animal, a dog (for an example). Then let's subject the dog to a sort of special medical treatment, implant a human Pituitary gland to the dog (for an example). And assume that the dog will be gradually change his behavior from the dog's kind to the human kind. And therefore the language skills of the protagonist will grow gradually. ;-)

Actually I wanted to highlight key, memorable events in the lives of the main characters. There will be, of course, many such events and they will be described with lots of details. Besides, don't forget that this book will have a special flavor for the intended readers (foreigners who learn Russian), because: 1. They not just read a book, they learn the language it is written in; and 2. It describes the life in (Post-Soviet) Russia.
Of course this book will be boring for native Russians :)

An interesting idea, but isn't that something like "The heart of a dog"?

Here is the beginning of the book. It takes place in winter of 1990. One of the two main characters, Andrey Stuzhin, 4 years old, goes to his kindergarten.

— Андрюша! Вставай, семь утра!
Меня будит мама. Я открываю глаза. В комнате темно. На улице тоже темно. Под одеялом тепло и хорошо. Надо вставать. Я не хочу вставать, я хочу спать. Сейчас мама будет будить Сашу, и можно ещё немножко поспать. Я закрываю глаза и засыпаю.
— Андрюша, ты опять заснул? Проснись!
Мама трясёт меня за плечо. Ах, как хочется спать!
Я еще сплю и сажусь на кровать. Рядом мама будит Сашу, он тоже не хочет вставать.
— Саша, вставай! Кашу проспишь!
Заходит папа.
Саша говорит:
— Спать!
Папа отвечает:
— Не «спать». Сейчас я включу свет.
Я кричу:
— Нет!
И Саша за мной повторяет:
— Нет!
— Тогда вставайте! — говорит мама.
Мы встаем и идем в туалет. Там горит свет. Глазам светло! Мы закрываем лицо рукой, чтобы было темно. После туалета идем в коридор, чтобы одеваться. Зимой холодно, нужно надевать много-премного одежды. Я не знаю, что надевать, мне мама говорит. Папа тоже не знает, что мне надевать. Только мама всё знает. Один раз я спросил папу: «А что сейчас надевать?», а он сказал: «Я не знаю!» Я больше не спрашиваю папу, он всё равно не знает.
Саша сидит на стульчике, я сижу на другом стульчике. Я смотрю на стену, на ней висит картина. На картине тётя на лошади, а рядом бежит собачка. Мама раньше про эту тётю говорила, это не тётя, а дама, потому что это старинная тётя. Я тогда спросил у мамы: «А старинная собачка как называется?» Мама засмеялась и сказала, что тоже собачка. «А лошадка тоже просто лошадка?» Она сказала: «Да.» Я спросил, почему раньше тёть звали дамами, мама что-то ответила, но я уже забыл.
Теперь я смотрю на варежку, она лежит на полке. Варежка серая, шерстяная и колючая. Она похожа на собачку. Собачка лежит у входа в домик и сторожит. В домике живут собачкины детки.
Подходит мама. Я говорю ей:
— Смотри, это собачка, она домик сторожит, а в домике собачата!
— Не собачата, а щенки!
— В домике щенки, а она их сторожит.
— Хорошо, — говорит мама. — Надевай колготки.
Колготки надо надевать зимой, потому что холодно. Летом их не надо надевать! Я не люблю колготки, они тесные и не надеваются. Их тянешь, тянешь, а они не надеваются. Я ищу колготки и не вижу их.
— Мама, а где колготки?
— А ты везде посмотрел? Под кофтой смотрел?
Я поднимаю кофту и вижу под ней колготки. Потом я опять смотрю на собачку. Она еще лежит и сторожит свой домик. А папа собачат ушел на работу. Интересно, что делают собачата?
— Андрюша!
Я начинаю надевать колготки. Тяну их, тяну, но ничего не получается. Мама подошла и надела их мне. У нее легко получается! У нее руки большие, и колготки их слушаются. Мама говорит:
— Теперь надевай рубашку, кофту и штаны!
Потом идет к Саше и одевает его. Он совсем маленький и сам не одевается. Он мало слов говорит. Он тоже любит играть, только он мало понимает. Он тоже ходит в садик в ясли. Там маленькие дети, как он. А я большой, мне четыре года. Четыре — это если взять руку и один палец сложить, тогда будет четыре пальца. А если все пальцы, то это пять лет. Мне потом будет пять лет. Раньше мне было три года, а сейчас четыре. Когда стало четыре года, это называется «день рождения», тогда дарят подарки. Мне подарили солдатиков. На Новый год тоже дарят подарки, только это не мама с папой, а Дед Мороз. Он приходит в садик сначала и дарит конфеты и апельсин, а потом еще ночью приходит, когда мы спим, и под ёлкой оставляет игрушки. Маме с папой он игрушки не дарит, потому что они взрослые. Взрослые в игрушки не играют. А когда я буду взрослый, то буду покупать себе много игрушек, какие сам захочу.
Я надел рубашку, кофту и штаны и сижу. Мама уже одела Сашу, он стоит в валенках. Сейчас я тоже надену валенки, шубу и шапку. У меня красивая шапка, на ней красная звезда, как у солдата. Мама застегивает мне большой ремень, на нем золотая пряжка, тоже со звездой. Такие ремни у солдат. Когда я вырасту, то буду солдатом.
Из комнаты выходит папа, они с мамой говорят. Что-то скучное и непонятное. Почему взрослые всегда говорят про скучные вещи? Есть столько всего интересного! А они говорят про других взрослых и еще про что-то.
Мама с папой надели пальто, открыли дверь. Мы с Сашей выходим в дверь в подъезд. Там стоят наши санки. Еще там есть другие двери, там живут другие люди. Напротив нас живет мальчик Вова, он большой и ходит в школу. Иногда он с нами играет во дворе. Он знает много интересного.
Папа несет мои санки, а мама несет Сашины санки. Они все идут к лифту, и мама нажимает кнопку. А я иду вниз один по лестнице. Иногда я спускаюсь на первый этаж раньше всех, а иногда они спускаются раньше и ждут меня. Мама с папой всегда торопятся, и папа сердится, когда им нужно меня ждать.
Я спускаюсь по этажам. На каждом этаже написаны цифры зелёной краской. На одном этаже стоит большой деревянный сундук. Никто не знает, что там, даже мама. Я думаю, там лежит клад. Дальше на другом этаже на стене висит старый велосипед. Он мне большой, на таком только большой дядя может ездить. Мой папа тоже может на таком ездить, но у него нету велосипеда, а этот велосипед — чужой. Еще на одном этаже в углу стоят лыжи. Мама говорит, на них катается дедушка, который там живет.
Я открываю дверь на улицу и выхожу из подъезда. Мама, папа и Саша уже вышли и ждут меня. Саша сидит на своих санках. Я сажусь в мои санки, и мама с папой везут нас до садика.

Большой вопрос — нужно ли проставлять ударения в тексте, если он предназначен для самых начинающих?

I've translated the beginning of the book into English and aligned it with the Russian source. Can anyone please check my English? The PBO file is here (you'll have to open it with Aglona Reader).

Yeah, let's do it! I'm sure I've seen a tutorial for how to create perfect parallel books somewhere online.
I reckon it should also have an audio part, read in Russian and English respectively, by native speakers.

Here is a screenshot of the book that Inego made. It's at a very good level for a beginner.

@Inego - your English is very near native/perfect. In the bits that don't sound perfect, the only reason for it is that you did not want to translate to something too different from the original text. So rather than change the translation substantially, you used a direct translation that sounds a tiny bit "off" from an English perspective. But it's not a big deal at all. The only impact is that a Russian person who is using the book to learn English will not get a perfect native sounding English 100% of the time. It's the nature of translation unfortunately — in order to get a natural sounding translation it's not possible to always do a word-for-word translation.

The Aglona Reader is a very cool piece of software.... I have some parallel books Russian-English and Russian-Swedish in Word and PDF format. I can upload them if someone is interested. I got them on some rainy day when I scoured the internet high and low... It's Russian fairy tales, Karlsson and some short works by classic authors. To be quite honest I haven't used them yet, other than Karlsson. :-D

Hanna, thank you very much for your interest and your kind words.
You say that "a Russian person who is using the book to learn English will not get a perfect native sounding English 100% of the time". I think this parallel text is intended mostly for learners of Russian, and it's not the best text to learn English: the first reason is what you've already said: its English; the second one is the depicted reality. In my opinion, this experimental "linguistic existentialism" approach must work better when that reality corresponds to the language spoken. Who knows, maybe someone, some day will write something similar with a US or a UK setting.
You've also mentioned Russian-Swedish Karlsson. While this is one of the best books for kids ever written (even adults have fun reading it), it's still protected by copyright laws and I doubt copyright holders will allow me to use the texts for a parallel book and publish it for free. Of course one still can align the texts and share the parallel book as a torrent, but I will never be able to publish it on Aglona Reader site or promote it anywhere. That's why I'm so interested in free modern literature which for some reason seems to be much more uncommon than free software.
Writing this book seems to take so much effort and energy (sperk's right in calling it ambitious), especially in the part to invent what happens and where it happens. I've temporarily switched my attention to the translation of Debora's blog since it represents a rare combination of advantages: 1. It's written in modern Amercian English, and the author has allowed me to publish the resulting parallel book for free. 2. Its setting is the USSR in its final days, the reality seen with author's eyes. 3. The blog is very interesting to read for learners of Russian AND for learners of English. 4. The experience gained by translation will be useful for writing the book this thread is about.
The only "disadvantage" is that Debora's blog can hardly be used by beginners because of the "difficulty level", but, of course, it will find lots of its readers with medium and advanced levels of the language they learn.
