Thread: Polish, Ukraine, and Russian Language.

I heard someone say that Ukraine is the old style Russian language. So is that kind of a reason why I can kind of understand it a little bit when I hear it? I speak Polish and this one time I heard Ukraine people talk and I had a good idea of what they were saying.

Oversimplification. But generally, Ukrainian is more archaic. It contains some features extinct in modern Russian, like vocative case, or old month names.

Generally Ukrainian is closer to Polish, than Russian. But, again, it depends.

about 1/8th of the links you could have clicked to find out a little something something about Russian and Ukrainian (or even belorussian) if you really wanted to, instead of creating an entirely new post.

we can't answer your question. Ukrainian is just different, like Russian, Ukrainian, and Belorussian are just dialects of some underlying "Protoslavic" language. You can't say that one is "older" than another.

The protoslavic language is seen as having divided into three groups, - eastern, western, and southern. It's just like how dialects develop. In the US we have our own dialect of English, but ours is really easy to date, because it is relatively recent. Everyone knows when people moved here from the British Isles.

Ukr, Br and Ru are in the east slavic group. Pol, Cz. Sk (and some minor others like Upper and Lower Lusatian, for any linguists reading this) are in the western group, and Sr, Cr, Slov, Mac, Bulg, are in the southern group., along with OCS. I may have overlooked some languages.

But then Ukraine borders on Poland, yes? And so there is a lot of admixture there both ways. That may explain why you understand Ukrainian better than Russian, altho both Ukr and Ru are from the eastern group.

I know Russian, and I know German, therefore I can understand Yiddish (written not spoken) because of the combined vocabulary. Same goes for you being able to understand Ukrainian.
