Thread: How to help us

If you like this site, there are many ways how you can help us make it a better place for learning Russian. You could help with your comments and suggestions, letting others know about this site, or contributing to the discussions on the forums. This should help us keep this site growing, add new Russian language lessons, have more lively forum discussions, and make sure that this site is always free. Here's a list of things you can do to help:

1. Tell your friends.
The more people know about our site, the more useful it will be for everyone. And this is the best way to help us right now. You could link to us from your website, write about us on a blog, recommend our site to your friends and family, and talk about us on other forums and websites. Our sites include MasterRussian.com (lessons/resources) and MasterRussian.NET (forums).

2. Join forum discussions.
You can help others by answering their questions, or ask your own questions and translations requests if you need help.

3. Correct mistakes.
We are all human and make mistakes. Good thing is that we can correct them. If you find a spelling mistake or any other errors in our lessons (found at MasterRussian.com), we would appreciate if you let us know about them. Please, leave a comment on this forum.

4. Make suggestions.
This could be anything about our site, lessons, or forums. If you have an idea how to improve MasterRussian or if you find something missing, do not hesitate to talk about that on the forum.

5. Visit our bookstore.

That's pretty much it. We are not looking for any money from you The best help you can provide us is perhaps to recommend us to your friends and to mention about us on other websites.

I have a life and enjoy adding to my life, various insight, blessing and enrichment that I can from different sites. I apologize for not using the site more frequently but from time to time, I need some different perspective or help on something that I can't look up with my many reference materials and I log in to see how I can be helped from this site. I am always satisfied and pleased with the responses and enjoy what people have contributed to my Russian language studies.

Maybe I need a thread called "How to help me!"

All of a sudden, today, I cannot type my Russian alphabet on several websites: here, Multitran, Lingvo. Instead of Cyrillic, I can only type a crazy English script, out of order - here's the keyboard, which usually writes Cyrillic:

9FC:5=3HI7EJ\
DK20?@>;46M
OGA<8BL1N.

I saw on the Multitran forum that at least one person was having trouble, too.

I've been out of town this weekend, so I don't know when it started - although it was fine last week.

Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas to help? Could this be some kind of virus?

PS - I can still cut-and-paste Cyrillic from my Word documents.

Nope, any other ideas?

Windows? Mac? Firefox? IE? Version? Any error messages? Anything else unusual? Before we can interpret anything we always ask for CONTEXT, and that includes PC problems too! Try googling for your situation, for example:

Did you install any Windows updates (sometimes it happens automatically) or other programs recently? What changed? Try starting PC in Safe Mode, then log off and reboot.

You might make sure your machine has the latest updates for the operating system, have you checked?

What does "nope" mean? You don't have the toolbar or you couldn't uninstall it or what?

"Nope" means I uninstalled Google, and it did no good. There have been no warnings, etc, nothing out of the ordinary. I have Windows XP, and a good antivirus program. SIGH.

Try to dump IE and start using Firefox or Chrome. During the installation NEVER include Google Toolbar (just un-check the selected box). IMHO, I don't believe in anti-virus programs. Sometimes I think that viruses are written by the anti-virus companies so that people would purchase their product. Just have a good router with a built-in firewall and never open any executable attachments or suspicious links and you'll be fine. Before I dumped my last anit-virus program I had all kinds of strange viruses attacking me (and other unexpected activities as well), but now all viruses "just" aren't coming. Why is that so?

Sorry, Winifred, I don't understand your question. What do you mean can I use it? Don't I use it everywhere in the forum?.. I'm sure every Russian has the Cyrillic alphabet on his/her computer. I never had any problems with it.

P.S. Oops, I was stupid. You asked if we say "кириллица" when we mean our alphabet. The answer is yes, sure we do.

А почему мы не играем в языковые игры, и на том, и на другом языках?
Я долгое время подвизалась на одном LearningEnglish сайте, где было очень много игр, Забавно и полезно. Жалко, что мой hard drive died (я не знаю, как это сказать по-русски. Как?) и все links (адреса?) and favorites потеряны, и я забыла the password (это пароль?)... Словом, ни сама не могу этот сайт найти теперь, ни они тоже не шлют notifications (извещения?)...

Так или иначе, почему бы не попробовать здесь языковые игры?

favorites => лучше всего сказать "закладки"
password (это пароль?) => пароль
notifications => уведомления

Я бы сказала «сдох». ))

favorites => в русском интерфейсе это [папка] Избранное

link - ссылка
hyperlink - гиперссылка (но это не такое уж и частое слово)

Верно. А что это по смыслу? Выбери из двух вариантов:

1. Запомни эту ссылку себе в [папку] Избранное.
2. Заложи эту ссылку себе в закладки.

Предложи свой вариант с использованием [папки] Избранное.

Слушай, я не собираюсь тебе ничего доказывать. Мне не нужны твои "ладно-ладно... отбилась". Если ты не знаешь, как это по-русски, это не моя проблема. Я не собираюсь предлагать свой вариант. Есть общепринятый (возможно, кто-нибудь еще заглянет в эту тему и напишет его). Впрочем, может, и твой вариант в ходу. Мне безразлично.
