    hello.. Im new to everything...

    Hi everyone
I've always wanted to learn Russian but didnt start until very recently - lets just say I can pronounce the first 7 letters of the alphabet but have no idea what pronounciation goes with what character.

I bought the book "The Complete Idiots Guide to Learning Russian" and the first 5 pages is as far as I've gotten. I have learned some Spanish and French before but I'm not fluent; however, its a lot easier to translate French and Spanish considering the alphabet's are practically the same, as are the letters used.

I could REALLY use some help. I'm planning on going to college next Fall and want to maybe Major in Russian, would like to have some idea of the language by then. I've heard Russian spoken and I think its a beautiful language. I'm glad to have found this site. I've also looked around on Masterrussian.com and found it useful.

Any ideas on learning would be appreciated. Thanks so much

Happy starting, --Cass--. We're here to answer all your stupid questions.

P.S. Bold type abuse is bad, don't you know?

I'm sorry, I didnt know that! Thank you, I edited it

I wanted to at least learn the Russian keyboard so I enabled it and practiced typing "Hello!" - здравствуйте!

Maybe someone could explain exactly why those letters are used? (definitely a stupid question, lol) I would just like to understand why and how they are used. thanks

    Hi, Cass, and welcome aboard!

Not sure I understand your question as to why those particular letters are used?? That's the spelling for the formal hello. And Russian is a phonetic language, unlike English. In other words, forget what you know about English...Russian operates very differently.

I am just beginning, so I am still confused by things. As I'm still trying to get the alphabet down trying to figure out how to spell words isnt something I've quite figured out.

I'm sure I will be asking lots of questions as I am learning
This is a very nice site from what I've seen!

    Say, can someone translate this:
Личность сохраняется после биологической смерти, в том числе и после кремации. В этом случае к каждой частице пепла, остающегося после кремации, прикреплина структура личности того, кто подвергся кремации.

Personality remains after biological death, including after cremation. In this case to each particle of the ashes, which is remained after cremation, prikreplina the structure of the personality of that, who underwent cremation.

Какая разница, умереть богатым или бедным?

Какой толк от богатства если ты не счастлив.

I can't wait until I can leave this state, or at least this town. Galesburg blows.
