It depends on what do you want. If you want only to read then some books will do. If you want to speak and to be understood in real conversation then you need real speaking practice.

Anyways you have to plan to learn more than some basics and to have some continuous practice in reading or speaking. Otherwise you will forget all you have learnt very fast.

This is true about any language.
