Poor Wales isn't included on the flag though, since: 1. It doesn't really fit, and 2. Wales is a principality of England technically, whereas Scotland, England are seperate nations, and Ireland (was).
When Ireland become independant in the 1920s(was it), the six counties that wanted (voted?) to remain part of the UK split away from the rest of the country which became the Irish Free State, and then Republic of Ireland (Eire). The 6 counties became known as Northern Ireland and are the fourth country that comprises the UK.

But they didn't change the overall Union Jack
Hence the name changed from The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales.
This is why it is annoying when you see websites (99% of the time American) that list countries and have United Kingdom and Scotland listen seperately.
Great Britain technically isn't a country, it's just the mainland of the UK.
And people in Wales, Scotland and NI get pissed off if you refer to the UK as England.
