Thread: Guitar Hero 3 Faceplate concept art.

Just finished two designs for a vinyl covering of a Guitar Hero 3 controller. I decided to go with a Russian flag theme so here are my results. I also wanted to go with a СССР mini theme down by the red part of the flag.

First, a simple one:

Thoughts, suggestions, new ideas? The blue background is there simply to contrast with the white of the flag.

thats pure класс man... where can you get a vinyl for those controllers??? The second one is by far the best!

(i dont play it, but i have. i still dont get why people who are so good at it dont play real guitar instead of wasting their lives getting a skill thats not that impressive compared to a real guitar..)

Same reason people play call of Duty 4 instead of really joining the Army.

and the same reason people play GTA instead of becoming terrorists.

I have an automated vinyl cutter so I put the design into my computer and cut it out. The vinyl starts out as rolls of the stuff and you just cut what you need using the computer. Since it simply cuts I have to stick with simple color schemes, otherwise I'd have to take the design to someone who has a printer.

Bussie - I don't know Guitar Hero 3 controller - is the thingy cut out around the lines of the guitar shape? If so, fine, if not, get rid of the light blue. Pick a light blue that's the same hue as the royal blue of the flag, but with a much higher luminance, and maybe, if it's too bright, lower saturation. You'll want the flag to stand out.

I also like your second design best. You could make it a bit more dynamic by losing the symmetry of the star (which means you could also fit in the top bit.... )

As for your first design: the guitar and the flag are so stylized, that the hammer and sickle look too light and too detailed, IMHO. Try to redraw the hammer and sickle, bigger, bolder, lose the pretty little handle.... Think constructivist poster art. Play with the shape as well, and try to let it spill into the blue - maybe that would work.
I also like the "badly printed/ see-through" look of the second one; you could try that on the hammer and sickle as well.



PS: Wotz a computer vinyl cutter? Never 'eard of it - tell me more, sounds interesting!

The controller is in the shape of a guitar :P

I think he said he just made it that color to contrast the rest of the guitar.

aha... but this is different. It takes just as much money to buy a real guitar, and there are no dangers to it. It's not a comparison to call of duty and the army...

If you've ever seen cars with vinyl on them, its the same concept, but applied to the game controller. Here is a video showing an application onto a car. Cutters can only do one color so my guitar will have three layers. First a solid white, then the blue on top, and then red. But it will be cut so the white star is just the first layer showing through. Like this:

Then, the blue layer:

And last red


Just as before, there will be no light blue. It is just there to show contrast. When they are lined up correctly, they will look like the finished picture above.

ahaha... my friends are russians, so they wouldnt care if i had a soviet guitar hero controller. But my "friends" (aka-asshole amurkians at my school), think just because we speak russian together, we are communists.

I love walking into stores and speaking russian... you get the worst comments EVER. We sometimes pretend not to speak english, and its hilarious when someone says "go back to russia you communist", thinking we wont understand. I will either say "wow, you are an arrogant asshole", or just flick them off and leave.
