    Visiting St. Petersburg

Here very soon I will be going to St. Petersburg for a month to do some immersion training. I will be living with a russian family (Hopefully with a hot daughter), and going to class for 20 to 40 hours per week. What are some good places to visit while I'm there? Museum's, club's, monument's, etc.

Your family will probably let you know where to go.

But here is my 20 cents

My top 10 CULTURAL list is:
    1. Russian Museum
    2. Hermitage
    3. Chruch on the Spilled Blood
    4. Peterhoff
    5. Petropavlskii Fortress
    6. Isakskii Cathedral
    7. The metro (the subway, not the nightclub (although that club is the biggest in Peter))
    8. See the bridges open at 3 AM (if it is summer)
    9. Kanal tour
    10. Gatchina

my top 10 NON cultural list is :
    1. Night clubs like: Metro, Rossi's, Gribiedov, Money Honey
    2. Kafe's like: Idiot, Zavodnie Yaitsa (my favorite), chainaya lozhka
    3. Drinking Sovetskoe shampanskoe
    4. Waking up early and see all the sleeping drunks on the street
    5. Being robbed by the gypsies
    6. Being stopped by the militsia in a drunken state
    7. riding the bus number 5 during rush hour (which is the whole day pretty much)
    8. Drinking outside on Nevskiy, looking at people
    9. Eat Russian honey. OMG!
    10. Shaverma!!!

I think Shaverma deserves its own top 10. Top 10 Shaverma places in petersburg??

Come on though....Money honey as a top club? Place blows. Not a huge fan of metro either. Gribioedov isnt bad, although it has changed a lot in the last couple years. Fish Fabrique is pretty cool. Its pretty small and you can actually carry on a conversation there without yelling into someones ear. Some odd bands too, but sometimes good.

I used to live a block away from zavodnie yaitsa and never went, what is the big deal with it??

Go to a georgian restaurant. That would go on my list as well.

Well, if you are a foreigner, those clubs are the top spots... but it depends on what you want. Money Honey has two live bands playing on two different floors, and a third dance floor. Anyway, just my personal opinion Never went to the fish fabrique, though...

Well, I like zavoidnaya yaitsa on furstatskaya (if that is the one you meant), the interior is very interesting and there is a piano player there during the day. The food is good, and they have 4 liter beer dispensers you can order

Oh there is an excellent georgian restaraunt near Liteiniy... I forgot the name though. A hole in the wall, but the food is excellent!

Unfortunately, neither of the places kalinka vinnie mentioned are Russian. They are cool, but not really Russian. They are kind of geared towards foreigners, if you know what I mean. If you want a taste of something truly Russian, find Slonovaya Kost pub. Don't go there unaccompanied by a stalwart Russian friend if you're a guy. However, if Nikifor happens to be behind the bar, tell him you know Sascha Bohl and you'll be fine. He may even give you a few beers on the house. If you're a girl, you'll be fine no matter what.

I second that. Also, you must go to BDT. One of the actors is my relative.

oops, forgot the opera/ballet/theatre on my culture list. HIGHLY recommended!

Oh and if you get a chance to see a ZENIT soccer match, refuse it and run away as fast as you can. The fans are crrrrazy! (compared to the Norwegians, at least )

Geez that's a lot of stuff. Thanks a lot guys. I think the first thing I do though will be to definately get a fur hat. Yea I am in Germany right now and there are a lot of bars here geared towards americans, and I would much rather try to get the feel of real russian culture. I will definately try to do as much of this as I can. Thanks again everyone. Oh and VM thanks for the hookup at the bar. I figured you'd come through with somethin good.

    Totally agree with Floe.
Moloko is a real club. If you like rock music, you'll probably like Moloko.

    It's just details...

Moloko has the best atmosphere among all clubs in Petersburg.
