Thread: Citizenship

Hello This may be a very strange question but I am not sure how I can find out.. I am a Ukrainian citizen but I had a parent who was a Moldovan citizen(unfortunately passed away) and I was wondering because of this does this mean that I can also become a Moldovan citizen? Is anybody familiar with the process or how that works? I have the number of the Moldovan embassy and I know probably the best way to find out would be to call, but I thought maybe I could check here first.

Impossible. Local laws forbid double citizenship.
Ukraine is very zealous about being 100% Ukrainian.

On the other hand you may try to get Moldovian citizenship (I'm afraid I don't know if being a child of a Moldovian will help), and if you don't be too vocal about it (i.e. if Ukrainian officials don't know about it) you can have both.

I know Ukraine doesn't allow dual citizenship, I need to renounce my Ukrainian citizenship so I will have citizenship in the US but I also would like to know if I can get citizenship in Moldova as well. If your parent had Moldovan citizenship, can it help you get citizenship?

I'm actually very much surprised that someone wants Moldovan citizenship. Can you explain what do you need it for? Maybe it gives some fantastic privileges we all don't know about...

I think Moldavia does "ius sanguinis" as opposed to "ius soli", so you shouldn't have any problems with gaining their citizenship, as long as both, Moldavia and US allow dual citizenship. Don't know for sure, though.

I know Moldova and USA both allow dual citizenship. I have to renounce my Ukrainian passport in a few months, and I think to travel to Ukraine on a Moldovan passport would be less of a problem then travelling with an American passport... not to sure though.

Are you serious? You can easily get into Ukraine with a US passport, no visa required or anything. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe and huge numbers of Moldovans work abroad as migrant workers (very often illegally), so a Moldovan passport will do you no favours, in with its neighbour Ukraine. Furthermore, you obviously not being a Moldovan, not speaking the language, arriving from America with an American accent etc. will cause suspicion by having a Moldovan passport.

I had the half idea of getting my third citizenship and passport too - and show all three of them at the border.

You'll end up without some of your passports that's for sure.

I just thought that entering Ukraine with a Moldovan passport would cause less issues than entering with an American passport? I actually don't have an American accent.. and I am part Moldovan. My relatives in Moldova were Russian speaking however.. not Romanian speaking. If I were to get a Moldovan passport, I would travel on the US and Moldovan passport (since I would have to leave the US on a US passport)

I don't mean to be annoying, I was just wondering if it was a good idea or a bad idea. I know I won't get special treatment or advantages with a Moldovan passport. It's not something I know that I have to do, I know I can get there with an American passport.. I don't know. I'm confused

What makes you think that you will have to turn over your Ukrainian passport when you take out US citizenship? I think it is up to the Ukrainians to collect your passport if they want it! Unless things have changed the US does not collect foreign passports from people. That is not their jurisdiction. I have three passports. Just show the one for the country you are entering.

I have to renounce my Ukrainian citizenship because it does not allow dual citizenship for me to enter Ukraine if I want to go back for a visit.. in which case I would go on an American passport. The reason is because I was adopted as a kid and have citizenship there until I am 18, then I decide to keep it or not but Ukraine doesnt allow dual so I have to renounce it. Of course I would rather keep it. It is a worry that I will travel back to Ukraine on an American passport and that somehow I won't be able to leave or something.. and I thought maybe with a Moldovan passport this can not happen? I'm not sure... I really don't know. I really want to go back but I'm not sure what to do

Why would you not be able to leave, though? If you'd have an American passport, then I don't see why Ukraine would keep you there. In fact, I don't think it'd be lawful for them to do that, unless, of course, you were smuggling drugs, or whatever

How will the Ukrainian border guard know that you also have a Ukrainian passport if you travel to Ukraine with a visa in your USA passport? Just don't ell them that your are Ukrainian and travel there as as American. You can worry about them taking away your passport at some future time. But perhaps by then it is possible that they will change the law.
I would hold onto that Ukrainian passport as long as I could.

Do you really think I should keep it? Why? I agree with you completely.. I don't want to renounce it at all. I think that my american family thinks it would be safer... I agree, how would they know if I have a Ukrainian passport? Mm...

Listen, I travel on three passports. I doesn't matter that one country doesn't recognize the other country's passport. It only matters that the country I am in at the time, recognises the passport i show them. If you travel on a US passport with a visa or entry stamp, for Ukraine, then you are travelling as an American citizen. If you have problems you can call on the US Embassy as a US citizen for help. If you travel on your Ukrainian Passport, however, you will not be able to call on the US Embassy for help, because you will have entered Ukraine as a Ukrainian, even if you have your US passport with you. But you still should be able to leave Ukraine with your US passport. I'm not sure what the problem is here but contrary to what someone said, it is not illegal to have several passports and no one is going to take some away from you except the country that issued it to you. Anyway you should look here, because the Ukrainian rules differ for people who have different circumstances, so it is not clear from the information you have given what problems you may have.
