I recommend this site!
You can write in English or Russian.
I get really good in-depth answers to my questions straight away here. I find this site incredibly useful and interesting to visit. The members are smart and helpful. This site frankly, is unique on the internet, mainly due to some of the participants. I doubt you can find any other place with as many helpful & knowledgeable Russian-speaking people who can also express themselves clearly in practically flawless English.
Also, remember: If you go to a chat room you might meet a bunch of kids or people who don't really know their own mother-tongue very well, and who will give you incorrect information, or confuse you.
Here it is the opposite. I have learnt tons, even about English and about general grammar (needed in order to learn Russian grammar).
But if you find something, do let use know...
PS - Remember that if you want / expect help from others you should be prepared to return the favour... There are many people on this site who are trying to improve their English and you can help with this.
Chats are bad places to ask language questions. Often such questions appear to be not so simple on the second glance and can not be answered immediately without some thinking and in-depth explanations. In chats you will have a plenty of misunderstandings and incorrect information.

I would like to use chat for real time answers to very simple questions... such as when I know a word but for the life of me can't spell it properly and google doesn't work because it finds the word using my incorrect spelling because apparently some russians can mis-spell as badly as I do
and I try to type it in the translators or dictionaries and none of them will recognize it because it is so badly mispelled...
that is just one example, and I forget the word that prompted the question already... but there are also some other small things I sometimes need answers too... so for that I think a chat would be useful, unfortunately I can only find paid ones.
does anyone know of any web sites that will spellcheck in russian a word if I type it?
Russian speakers usually use http://gramota.ru/ to check spelling. But in my feeling it is not enough brilliant in recognizing badly misspelled words.
You can use Lingvo online http://lingvo.abbyyonline.com/en/ru-en/
it gives some variants if the word is misspelled.
If you use Windows and MS Office you can install Russian spell check in MS Word:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...CL100636481033 Also you can do it in Opera web browser. Both of them also propose some variants for misspelled words.
Of course any word can be misspelled in such a way that it becomes unrecognizable by the automatics. But again it means that the problem is difficult and I'd recommend to ask in forums (like this one) rather than in chats.

Think about it: Why would anyone hang out on a chat channel to answer beginners questions about their language, for free?
But you can always login to IRC with mIRC (check this in wiki if you don't know what I'm talking about) I am sure there are plenty of Russian speaking channels on IRC. Whether the people there would answer your questions is a different story....
I used it when I started out as a developer years back and it's a bit hit and miss. The people there can be very helpful or just kick you off because you ask a stupid question, lol.
Also there is a problem with time zone. If you are, from example, from USA, and want to chat with someone from Russia at 7 p.m., there will be 7 a.m. there, and not so many people sitting in chat at so early morning. But, anyway, you can try IRC (I suggest to use western servers, like irc.rizon.net , where is pretty lots of Russians there, and over nations, too), also you can search in ICQ or Skype for some random people, or you can use services like sharedtalk ( http://www.sharedtalk.com/ )...
