    Russian Filelockers?

As some may know, there has recently been a terrible fallout from the filesharing scene in the USA and Europe.

This was started by the arrest of the owner of a popular filelocker site called Megaupload. What happened to him was so shocking that lots of European filelocker owners panicked and closed their sites. As a result, many excellent aggregation sites are having problems now, for example as site that I really like, called UZ TRANSLATIONS. This site has literally thousands of books for learning Russian, or almost any other language. It's absolutely mindblowing what they are offering, however at the moment the site is on the verge of not being able to function - due to web censorship or whatever you want to call it.

The problem that they are having now is that all the links to their material are broken - since the filelockers that they are using have been shut down, or just blocked users from the US, or blocked people from downloading material that they did not upload themselves.

Now the question is, are there any good Russian filelocker sites that they can recommend?
Russia seems like one of the safest countries for this kind of stuff at the moment.

Hopefully the American / European filesharing scene will recover, but at the moment it's on its knees. It would be good to know what he situation is like on this front, in Russia.

I normally prefer torrents over filelockers, but the material at UZ translations is so specialised that it may not be feasible to use bittorrent for sharing it.

I don't know sites like that but they probably exist.
Uz translations was very useful although I have never used it.

hmmm, maybe the filesharing situation in Russia is so relaxed that people don't even bother with file lockers but simply throw stuff like pdfs on a server and let people share....

I seem to miss something: file locking purpose is to restrict access to the data while file sharing is a service which provides a server to share files. When a person need to share a file with restricted access he just compressed it with a password protection (using zip, rar or other archivers) and upload it to any file sharing service.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

I agree that it is a strange word. But the expression is "filelockers" and it refers to sites like Rapidshare and Megaupload. If you want to download something you have to wait for a few minutes, or pay a premium fee to become a member.

Filesharing refers mainly to torrent sites, but I think it can refer to the concept of "sharing" through filelockers too. That's what happens on the Uz translations site.

This very interesting topic is the subject of the Torrentfreak.com website - the only site I follow other than than Masterrussian.

I did not use megaupload often, but the death of filesonic was a black day for me *sniff*. I actually think that piracy is a good thing both for users and - in the long run - for copyright holders.

I think that any filelocker that attracts attention to itself is in danger of being closed nowadays.
For example, Ukraine’s largest file-sharing site ex.ua was closed recently, and police seized their 200 servers. It caused a pretty big scandal, with news reports, street meetings and hacker attacks on Ukrainian government sites. The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs gives mixed signals about it (there was info that the investigating officer who made a decision was promptly fired after that, lol, and the ministry officials said that they are not going to prosecute the hackers who took part in these attacks). The site itself was on and off since then. It seems the officials did not expect such an outcry and can't decide what to do with it.

I actually read about ex.ua after it had been shut down. What a pity! I never used it though.
At least two of the best English speaking torrent trackers are hosted in Ukraine; Demonoid.me and Bitsnoop - something about Ukraine makes it an attractive location.

It's a pity that the Ukrainian gov't doesn't take a more cynical perspective - Ukraine has lots of really good techies that are probably contributing a lot to the country. I doubt that a single person working in the IT industry in Ukraine is completely innocent of piracy.

I learnt lots of things from pirated material myself and I could not have afforded to buy a fraction of the stuff I downloaded. I wouldn't have bought it anyway, so the question is almost irrelevent.

This is a map of demonstrations against copyright legislation that are taking place in Europe today, Saturday.

Hanna, do you need books on russian to read online or to download? I mean russian classics and contemporary literature, special literature etc. For example here is the web-page with a poets of silver age - Серебряный век — поэзия и поэты серебряного века And nothing illegal. That's just one on the many sites, so if you need more - feel free to ask.

Here goes one very interesting link for all cartoon-lovers - Мультфильмы и аниме на любой вкус смотреть онлайн :: Самое большое собрание мультфильмов и аниме онлайн

There you can find hundreds of different famous cartoons on russian (Simpsons, Family Guy, King of Hill, American Dad and so on) and classical USSR-cartoons and films (I think this will be even more interesting). Some cartoons and their episodes have subtitles in russian with english voice. Enjoy!
