5 year passport

so i was told that both russian passports last for 5 years (as opposed to 15yrs in the UK for example). firstly, i think thats super inconvinainte, but i got to wondering: if a novii russian with lots of $$$ was, say, studing in england on a 5 year uni course, but they applied when they had maybe 3 years left on their passport, what would happen?
if, hypothetically, the passport ran out while they were in another country what would happen??
just leave it to the embassy? i know for a a fact the russian emb. staff in london are not the most helpful bunch.

We still have such idiocy as two passports. The first one общегражданский паспорт (common citizen passport) serves as a primary identification document and is used inside Russia. It never expires, you only need to put in new photographs once in a while. My passport was issued only in 2001 (my old one was of USSR). When, however, you neet to travel abroad you may apply for a foreign passport (заграничный паспорт) (it's not mandatory). It lasts 5 years and needs to be re-issued mostly because of the fact that it may simply run out of pages when time comes to stick in a new visa. But of course if you had had some access to military or state secrets you might be refused.

Не вижу ничего идиотского. У этих паспортов разные функции, вот и все.

Actually, Ramil, we have two in Belgium as well. One basic one (the ID-card), which is (as good as) free, and obligatory, and with which you can travel within all the European countries, and a couple of others, like Morocco and Turkey (we have a lot of immigrants here :lol: ). The second one, which is bl**d* expensive, is the purplish booklet you all know, but it is by no means obligatory, and only bought by people who want to travel to countries where the ID card isn't accepted.

And you know what - I think it's a great system. We don't need seven different means of identification: social security card, driver's license, what have you. My sister and I once tried to rent a video in Denmark - for ID, the lady wanted to see our social security card. Needless to say, we didn't have one, as I live in Belgium, and my sister in the UK. We offered our (travelling) passports, my Belgian ID card, my sister's driver's license..... she wouldn't budge. No video for us...... :(

Collect a registered letter? Show your ID card.
Open a bank account? Show your ID card.
Get stopped for driving too fast? Show driver's license (usually with a pic that's taken 100 years ago, so the person can't be recognized) and ID card.
Want to get into one of the EU office buildings ( :lol: )? Show your ID card.
Nice and easy, everbody's equal. :)

I think it's a nice, simple system, that makes life a lot easier for everybody. :dunno:

My other half recently renewed her international passport at the Russian embassy in London without any trouble.

Separate foreign passport is sometimes used to limit you ability to leave Russia. For example if you deal with secret documents (however unimportant and outdated they are) you may legally lose the permission to get your foreign passport for say 5 or 10 years.

Here's a list of documents I need in Russia:

- Passport (Паспорт)
- International Passport (Заграничный паспорт)
- Driving licence (Водительское удостоверение)
- Military ID (Военный билет)
- Medical insurance card (Карточка медицинского страхования)
- Social insurance card (Карточка пенсионного страхования)

There is no point in use the same passport as citizen ID and international passport at the same time. "People" in other countries" don't do that either, as far as I know. They use as an inner ID a driver license (which would be ridiculous in Russia, since some people don't have it), or social insurance number (er, I don't have it), or something else. We use passport for this, What's idiotic about that?

If you mold 2 in 1 you'll have more problems and questions, than you have now. One of them is that the new universal passport needs to be updated much more frequently for a number of reasons (no room for new viza stamps, new photos, etc.), and if you don't travel much, it's a pain in the *ss. The current inner passport, on ther other hand, needs to be updated only a couple of times in your lifetime (new photos, when you're 25 and 45 y/o).

Why use 6 documents when you should have only one. Ok, we need a place to put visas and border crossing stamps on, but why don't we use a single document as a passport, ids of all kinds, taxpayer id, and so on. Why don't use a single identification number and a single document instead of all above mentioned?

They are extremely helpful to Russian nationals. If you're a Russian citizen in this particular predicament, you can have your paperwork done through the embassy without any hassle.

Not only in Russia, dear. :) I don't have a driver's license, neither have my sister and my brother-in-law, neither have several of my friends. Doing fine with public transport.

I have noticed very, very often that Russians tend to divide the world into "Russian" and "Non-Russian", whereby "Non-Russian" equals "American".
Europeans for one have very little in common with Americans (and non-UK Europeans even less... :wink: ). Also: there are an afwul lot more countries and states in the world than just the Amercan and European ones. ;)

Well, they're beginning to do that here now. The medical insurance and social security card have been moulded into one, and the new identity cards that are being issued now also hold much more different information than before.

The thing is, how do you fit all that information onto a single card?
Answer: you get a card the size of a credit card, with your photo on it and your name. And a chip. What information about you does the chip hold?
Weeelllllllll..... your guess is as good as mine.

Modern technology can compile all you want into one document indeed.
But it opens up a million Big Brother possibilities.

Cool! :D I don't have one either. I'm thinking about buying a car, though. But... later, much later. When public transportation is good, but garages and roads are not, a private car is somewhat of a liability.

Yeah, we do. ;) But in the above post I didn't mean that everybody else in the world has a driver's license. I was talking about Russia, that's all. No generalization here. :)

Eh... I don't know. Maybe it is, maybe it's not. I was given some 'very important' ID with my personal number and such about 10 years ago, but I lost it the same week and can't remember what it was. Nobody ever asked for it and nobody is chasing me to give me a new one. :lol:
... I think in Ukraine we have taxpayer ID instead (this one I have).

In Russia there are too much hackers for that system. They can hack your card and receive all data bases from it. So, i guess that system will have never been using in Russia... Separate documents more safety...

China has more hackers for one thing and the card shouldn't have anything coded in it except its unique id number. (A hash code of your thumbprint digital image for example or DNA information). Everything else is stored in external databases (as it is now) the only difference that every other database requires unique ID (passport number, taxpayer id, etc) why don't use a single one? If someone really wants to find any information about you he can do that even now. We shouldn't stop the progress being afraid of hackers.

FSB and similar nice organisations can have all the information about you within several minutes anyway. Why bother?

The weak point of a "pure identity" card is that it is useless when you have no access to the external database (not to mention that the DB itself can fail). So it is anyway necessary to have the most critical data "on board".

Aren't UK passports 10 years? I got my latest one in 2004 when I was 18 and it expires in 2014... For under 18s they are 5 years.
