Now the wording. He used "never" in his question because people who believe in afterlife claim "Life never ends", so that what's he's direcly questioning. The same applies to Russian, if someone says: "Этот сериал никогда не закончится", your question to that statement would be "Этот сериал (и правда) никогда не закончится?"
